Sperm induction

Sperm induction is a fertility treatment for men with low levels of pituitary hormones. As one of the major treatment centres in the UK, we offer expertise in successfully treating patients with this condition.

Introduction

The brain releases a hormone called gonadotrophin hormone (GnRH) to stimulate hormone release from the pituitary gland. There are two pituitary hormones that are critical to male fertility: FSH which produces sperm and LH which produces testosterone. A problem in the pituitary gland can cause deficiency of these hormones and therefore infertility. Men are born with this problem have ‘congenital deficiency’. Sperm induction aims to rectify this by restoring hormone levels and consequently the fertility of the patient.

What does our treatment involve?

We provide a structured programme: after seeing you for an initial assessment, we initiate a schedule of hormone injections twice weekly, which are self-injected. Subsequently, we will see you every 3 months for assessment of semen analysis and testosterone levels. The overall programme can take between 9 to 18 months to get optimal results. From our perspective, it is key to patient about their progress and openly discussing personal timelines around fertility.

10% of patients are non-responsive to this treatment. These patients may require micro-surgical sperm retrieval (mTESE), a highly specialised operation which we are delighted to offer in our clinic.

How much does it cost?

We are happy to receive NHS referrals from GPs. Our price for an initial private consultation is £225, and followup consultations to monitor your progress are £160. Prescribed injections will cost extra but depend on the specific medicines and quantities required; your consultant will be able to tell you exactly what they will cost after your initial consultation.
